A solo by Russell Maliphant, created for Daniel Proietto
About
AfterLight (Part One) is a 15-minute solo created by Russell Maliphant for Daniel Proietto. The work premiered in 2009 at Sadler’s Wells as part of In the Spirit of Diaghilev, marking the 100th anniversary of the Ballets Russes.
The piece draws inspiration from photographs of Vaslav Nijinsky during his time with the Ballets Russes, as well as from Nijinsky’s own geometric drawings and circular paintings. These visual references informed Maliphant’s exploration of flow, energy, and continuity in movement. Echoes of the faded archival images are present in the monochromatic lighting and fragile visual textures, created through projected animation interacting with the dancer and the space.
Context & Reception
Following its premiere, AfterLight (Part One) received a nomination for the 2010 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production and was awarded the Critics’ Circle National Dance Award for Best Modern Choreography (2010).
The work has been presented internationally, broadcast by the BBC, and featured in critical highlights by The Telegraph, The Daily Express, and The Observer. Since its premiere, it has continued to tour worldwide, with essays and critical writing published on the work over time.
